How Water Maintains Climate Resilience – Natural Hydrology Remix from GERC2019 (Video)
This is a concept exploration remixing snippets from speakers at the Global Earth Repair Conference 2019. These are pieces from various presentations that specifically focused around the connection between climate and water. Some of the statements made here might seem controversial – to some extent, they are.
No one is seriously disputing that greenhouse gas emissions are contributing to climate change, but we might be missing a pivotal piece. If our plans for reversing or mitigating climate change involve destroying ecological systems, we could worsen our fate on the path we choose to avoid it.
If we forget about ecological restoration as a solution, we could be missing a massive boost to our efforts. Ecology upholds the balance of water, temperature and climate in a way that humans are destroying and do not have the means to replace intact. We must avoid tipping points in destruction of intact biological communities, as well as greenhouse gas emissions.
Both of these avenues of anthropogenic climate change must be dealt with if we are to make progress. The good news is there’s a lot of work here to do in this field!!
