Joanna Campe – Remineralizing the Planet

Business-Organization: Remineralize the Earth

As the founder and Executive Director of RTE, Joanna Campe raises public awareness of the crucial role of soil remineralization with finely ground rock dust, sea minerals and other natural means to regenerate soils, forests and stabilize the climate. She promotes partnerships with foundations and educational institutions, government agencies, international development agencies, the private sector, and NGOs. She has decades of related conference participation, project organization, media development, authorship, public speaking, professional networking, policy advocacy, and public awareness building. She has co-authored several research papers and is the co-editor of Geotherapy: Innovative Methods of Soil Fertility Restoration, Carbon Sequestration, and Reversing CO2 Increase.

In the early 1980s, Joanna read the book The Survival of Civilization by John Hamaker and Don Weaver and what had for her previously been “dirt” under her feet became a vast micro-universe that is the basis of all life. She recognized the tremendous importance of John’s work and joined together with him, Don Weaver and others to get the message out.

Workshop(s)

Workshop 1: History and Overview of the Global Remineralization Movement and Future Directions

Blueprint for a New Earth

Remineralize the Earth (RTE) is a Northampton, MA based, 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Since 1996, Remineralize the Earth has advocated for the life of this planet’s soils, championing a cleaner, more natural alternative to both chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

We promote the use of finely ground rock dust and sea-based minerals to restore soils and forests, produce more nutritious food, and remove excess CO2 from the atmosphere. RTE brings together farmers and gardeners, scientists and policymakers, as well as the general public through education, outreach, projects, research, and advocacy.

The simple technique of remineralization is an alternative to chemical fertilizers and pesticides that goes beyond our current definition of organic. Today our soils are so minerally depleted that on average you would need to eat 5 apples to have the same nutrition as 1 apple in 1965.

An RTE initiative is to focus on an innovative agroforestry system developed by Ernst Gotsch, which has the potential to produce a tremendous diversity of fruits, vegetables, coffee and cacao in one food system. One initial application of rock dust, jumpstarts the agroforestry project with no outside inputs thereafter. RTE would like to develop similar projects in the post hurricane-Caribbean, Haiti, Puerto Rico as well as Africa. We can also take a look at biodiverse nut farms developing in New England and the temperate latitudes.

We will explore how remineralization fits into regenerative agriculture and how to align ourselves as a community that integrates with other techniques and solutions for restoring the optimum biological activity in soils and forests.

Workshop 2: Mounting a Campaign to Remineralize Forests on a Vast Scale

“The widespread fires this year have magnified concerns that we are locked in a worldwide pattern of conflagration that is both persistent and catastrophic.”

The Earth Ablaze
By Don J. Melnick, Mary C. Pearl and Mark A. Cochrane.
The New York Times, August, 8 2018

Destructive and deadly wildfires of enormous size raged in California and the Pacific Northwest including British Columbia, Greece, Portugal, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Chile and Argentina.

Research, Outreach, and Policy Making – Remineralizing forests will increase resistance to insects, disease, frost, and drought.

Mount a Campaign – Remineralize forests from the air – mobilize local, state, federal, National Guard, or other means.

We will look at the research data for remineralizing forests and how it makes forests healthier, more resilient to drought, diseases and weather extremes. We will come together to explore, organize and consider the best strategy for mounting a campaign.
