Medicinal Gardens in Agroforestry Systems: A Collaborative Webinar
We hosted another session in our ongoing series focused on Africa-based changemakers – those working at the intersection of ecological restoration, community health, and traditional knowledge. We explored the practice of establishing medicinal gardens within agroforestry systems, a subject that brings together ecological design, cultural wisdom, and local resilience. This webinar was a collaboration between the ERA Africa Changemakers Collaborative and the Global Earth Repair Foundation (yours truly). Here is the YouTube recording:
This gathering explored how medicinal gardens can anchor agroforestry systems as seed banks, educational hubs, and centers of ecological and cultural renewal. We looked at how these gardens support biodiversity and offer practical pathways for food and medicine sovereignty in communities across Africa and beyond.
Speakers:
Michael Pilarski
Michael is a long-time permaculture educator, wildcrafter, and restoration practitioner from the United States with decades of experience working with medicinal plants, ethnobotany, and regenerative land-use systems. He is the founder of Friends of the Trees Society (friendsofthetrees.net) and has trained thousands of people through his workshops, publications, and conferences focused on agroforestry, wildcrafting ethics, and sustainable herbalism.
Muhangi Musinga
Muhangi is a Ugandan agroecologist, permaculture designer, and ecosystem restorer who works closely with communities to revitalize landscapes using indigenous knowledge systems and low-tech, nature-based solutions.
