Peter McCoy – Radical Mycology
Peter speaks on behalf of the fungi, the most overlooked and misrepresented organisms in the web of life. An interdisciplinary, systems-oriented mycology educator with 17 years of experience, Peter is the founder of MYCOLOGOS, the world’s first mycology school, and Radical Mycology, a grassroots mycological advocacy organization and social movement.
In 2016, Peter released Radical Mycology: A Treatise on Seeing & Working With Fungi, a 650-page book on mycology that has been hailed as one of the best texts on theoretical and applied mycology written to date, and a milestone for the progress of mycology as a people’s science.
Aware of the global need for accessible mycological education, Peter founded MYCOLOGOS in 2017 to share his extensive knowledge of – and passion for – mycology’s arts and sciences. A lover of the outdoors, his hands-on and environmentally-conscious approach to working with fungi is a direct response to a lifetime spent living in the fungi-rich Pacific Northwest of the United States.
Peter’s work has been featured in various news and media outlets, including Salon, GOOD.is, Grist, Vice’s Motherboard, and The Survival Podcast. And over the last decade he has presented at The Permaculture Voices Conference, The Village Building Convergence, The Telluride Mushroom Festival, The Breitenbush Herbal Conference, The National Brownfield’s Conference, and The North American Mycological Association, as well as for countless community groups and mycological societies around the world.

Workshop 1: Treating Contaminated Water with Fungi: Filtration, Sorbtion, and Digestion
How can molds, yeasts, and mushrooms heal water systems contaminated with heavy metals, chemical pollutants, or excess debris from erosion? Though this question often pops up in discussions on mycoremediation, applying the proven means by which fungi can address these scenarios is rare due to a lack of accessible information on the topic. In this talk, grassroots mycoremediation educator and pioneer Peter McCoy will help unpack and explore the many ways fungi can treat common water quality issues, showing you how to start applying many of these techniques in your own backyard or watershed.
