Workshop(s)
Workshop 1: Human Healing & Ecological Wholeness: Seeing the World through the Eyes of Traditional Medical Knowledge
To heal the planet, is to heal people. And to heal people, is to heal the planet. The restoration of humanity is therefore a vital factor in the success and sustainability of ecological wellness. However, it is also an element that is often overlooked or ignored in environmental restoration efforts.
So, how do we heal ourselves and the earth? With chronic disease on the rise, an aging population, and an over-reliance on pharmaceuticals, modern concepts of healthcare are failing. We have to turn to the old ways to understand what it means to truly heal.
Traditional Medical Knowledge (TMK) is the storehouse of generations of accumulated wisdom and honors the relationship of humans and the environment. In this interactive conversation participants will uncover how to view the human and other-than-human world through a relational lens. We will discuss Traditional Chinese Medicine concepts of living with the Dao, balancing yin and yang, and coming into relationship with place to create harmony between people and nature. There will be time for engagement, introspection, and a Q & A session to allow folks to embody the conceptual framework.
Workshop 2: The Five Elements: Exploring an Ancient Model of Healing for People and Nature
The Five Element Theory, or Wu Xing, is a philosophical and conceptual model for understanding relationship in Chinese thought. Originating around the 6th century BCE the Five Element Theory has stood the test of time, and has expanded in reach to give us remarkable insights into the nature of people, places, seasons, medicine, music, and the mind among others.
When we explore the world through the lens of Wu Xing we see that all of our behaviors and choices are interrelated. We also accept the notion that humans are a microcosm of the macrocosm, and therefore the laws of nature apply to our own physiology, mental constructs, and values.
In this discussion participants will receive an introduction to the Five Element Theory. We will cover how this theory views the interconnection of phenomena in nature, the role of people in the web of life, and how this model can be applied to help heal communities and places. Participants will be invited to explore their own five element type and will be encouraged and empowered to apply this ideology to their work in the world.
