Jim Rough is a social innovator and Director of the Center for Wise Democracy. As a business consultant he developed “Dynamic Facilitation” and “The Wisdom Council Process”, new tools which are used all over the world to bring transformational change to individuals and organizations. He is also a speaker, seminar leader and author of the book, “Society’s Breakthrough! Releasing Essential Wisdom and Virtue in All the People (2002).”
Dynamic Facilitation is a way to spark people to achieve breakthrough progress on impossible-to-solve issues. In my seminars teaching Dynamic Facilitation participants often practice their new skills by facing impossible-seeming issues from society like climate change, partisan gridlock, threats of authoritarianism, etc. One day in 1993 many of their breakthroughs came together for me into a strategy I’ve been taking forward ever since. It’s a way to facilitate “all” the people of our society to face and solve impossible-seeming problems together. Now, this strategy … called the “Wisdom Council Process”… has been adopted into the Constitutions of two states of Austria. And we’ve done enough experiments to know that it works more powerfully than first imagined. For example, with enough money you and I can just start facilitating global society to this higher level of collective consciousness, which of course is desperately needed.
Today our society is like a supertanker heading in a direction no one wants to go—trashing the planet, our democratic institutions and our people. But the “Wisdom Council Process” offers a way to quickly turn things around. It’s a way to educate the people, create shared vision, heal the partisan divide, establish new legislation, generate new technologies, etc. Why does it work? How is it different? How did it develop? Where has it been tried? Where should we try it for society? What exactly do we need to do? …. Now that the crisis is upon us, people are increasingly interested in answers to these questions.
