Robert Greenfield

“Robin Hood of Modern Times” – Orlando, Florida USA

Rob Greenfield is an activist and humanitarian dedicated to leading the way to a more sustainable, just and equal world. He has been nicknamed “The Robin Hood of Modern Times” for a reason; he embarks on extreme projects to bring attention to important global issues and inspire positive change. His work has been covered by media worldwide including National Geographic. Rob’s life is an embodiment of Gandhi’s philosophy: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Greenfield is the founder of Community Fruit Trees, the Free Seed Project and Gardens for the People. Through these programs, he has helped thousands of people gain access to healthy, homegrown food and increase their quality of life.

Greenfield believes that our actions really do matter and that as individuals and communities, we have the power to improve the world around us. Rob is very active on-line, yet donates 100% of his media earnings to grassroots nonprofits and has committed to living simply and responsibly for life. All proceeds from his public speaking in 2020 were donated to Indigenous- and women-led organizations.

For one year Rob grew and foraged 100% of his food. No grocery stores, no restaurants, no exceptions! Nature was his only sustenance; garden, pantry and pharmacy. Without land of his own, he turned others’ front yards into gardens and shared the bounty with his community. He shares his powerful journey to inspire us to take power back from the industrial food system and create food sovereignty within our communities. Still actively pursuing this dream, he’s also worked to create an unforgettable visual to help people understand how much trash they create and inspire them to make their own positive change. In one extreme but literal example, for 30 days he lived just like the average US American, but wore every piece of trash he created in that lifestyle.

In an era when inequality is at an all time high, Rob has committed to living simply so that others may simply live. He has vowed to earn less than the federal poverty threshold and now lives without a bank account, credit card, monthly bill, health insurance, or debt. His last home was a 100-square-foot tiny house built from secondhand materials. He owns around 44 possessions (with no personal vehicle or cellphone) as he travels. He lives for the benefit of the Earth, our global community of humans and all species, all while living a deeply purposeful and joyful life. Through his “extreme” example, he creates self-reflection in others and instigates change. Meanwhile, to address this issue and inspire solutions, Rob has rescued food from thousands of grocery store dumpsters and hosted “Food Waste Fiascos;” shocking visual demonstrations of food waste, in over a dozen major cities. He has eaten from hundreds of dumpsters and fed over 1,000 people in each, to prove this “waste” food is still perfectly good!
