Sweet Annie – An Herbal Ally against COVID-19

Article by Michael Pilarski, Friends of the Trees Society, June 1, 2020.

Breaking News! Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) is effective against Covid-19 coronavirus. There is now a cure and it’s an herb! This is good news for humanity!

This information comes out of Madagascar. On April 20, the Madagascar president, Andry Rajoelina, officially launched a medicine that they say can cure patients suffering from COVID-19 and is also a preventative. It is called Covid Organics or CVO. In late May, I watched a video of the president of Madagascar, drinking a bottle of an herbal infusion of which Sweet Annie is the main ingredient. This is the first time I heard the news, so it is likely little known in the US. So spread the word. The experience in Madagascar has been that patients who take Covid Organics improve in 24 hours and recover in 5 to 7.days. CVO is mandatory for school children returning to school after lockdown. CVO is distributed widely in Madagascar and exported to other parts of Africa. They have been sending donations and shipments to other African countries. The president of Guinea-Bissau personally took delivery of the first CVO delivery to his country. The Madagascar health service is doing a lot of clinical observation to support their claims.

While they say that Artemisia annua is the main active ingredient, I have not been able to determine the other ingredients in CVO but I have heard that cinnamon is one of the other ingredients and likely some African anti-viral herbs.

WHO is already casting doubts on the preparation saying it hasn’t been proven. But that is not deterring Madagascar who is thrilled with a remedy that can be grown and produced in Africa. They are also researching using the native Artemisia affra. WHO also says that Artemisia annua as an herb hasn’t been proven effective against malaria, only the standardized extract (which comes from the pharmaceutical companies). This is a lie since the Chinese in Yunnan have been using it as an effective traditional remedy for malaria for hundreds or thousands of years. WHO stands accused of corruption and capture by the pharmaceutical industry and vaccine manufacturers. Bill Gates is WHO’s biggest funder now that Trump has pulled US funding. We can expect that this new discovery will not make mainstream media news in Western countries but it is big news in Africa. Time will tell how this shakes out.

Artemisia annua is also being used to treat various types of cancer. What a great herb! Useful against malaria, Covid-19 and cancer.

Artemisia annua can be grown almost everywhere in the world, tropics to temperate. It is an easy to grow annual crop and I have been growing it in the Pacific Northwest for decades. It is one of the largest annual plants I grow. There are around 350 species of Artemisias found around the world. Many of the species are used medicinally. Sweet Annie is harvested in the early flowering stage. The seeds are tiny. Around 454,000 per pound. Best to start them in a flat or pot and then pot the seedlings in 4-inch pots once large enough. Once established in the pots, plant them out in the field or garden. Not fussy as to soil or fertility, but they will grow bigger if they get a fertile soil.

I have lots of 2019 seed in stock. Our seed price is $3 a packet (100 seeds plus per packet) plus shipping. Usually we charge a $10 per order processing & packing fee but for this I will lower the processing fee to $5 per order. We will send a free seed package (with free shipping) to any community project in Africa, Asia, South America and Central America. What can we learn from this experience?

  1. Some anti-viral herbs are useful against Covid-19. We know that Artemisia annua is one of them, but many others will likely also prove useful.
  2. Such medicines can be produced at the local level.
