Goran N’Diaye

Goran N’Diaye of Senegal is a pioneer and master of permaculture demonstrated by growing a lush oasis in the desert. He is the Director of the Kaydara agro-ecological farm located in Sine Saloum of Senegal. His story begins with finding water 4 meters below the ground in a very dry part of the country. He bought the land for the price of a loaf of bread and began farming. It started with a single coconut tree, even though his community thought he was crazy, he showed that it’s not a miracle…he simply saw change and implemented it.

He first started by restoring the fertility of the soil, by creating a first plant layer which in turn attracted birds and bees. Over time, Goran N’diaye established multi-shelf production including turnips, onions, and papayas. Following his own success, he’s now training the next generation of young Senegalese farmers. In doing so, he hopes to change traditions and spread sustainable, ecologically friendly farming practices. He wishes to move Senegal away from its traditional farming practices like peanuts, rice, and millet, which are responsible for keeping the people in poverty as they cut down trees.  His farm is now a school with 20 students every year.

The socio-economic impact of the Farm includes: a training of young adults in agro ecology techniques, a transfer of tools and knowledge on becoming an entrepreneur and an initiation in ecotourism activities for local benefits. Additionally, the project promotes local employment and provides employees with training and good working conditions. The activities proposed by the farm are managed by villagers and local supply and transport provides several additional benefits to the village. It is important to mention that Kaydara’s School Farm is deeply involved in the protection of its environment, including the use of renewable energy sources, compost production, the protection of coastal areas and the implementation of ecological farming practices.
