Traditional Burning – Cultural Fire Management

Traditional Burning In A Contemporary Context

Margo Robbins, will be presenting Saturday Period C 10:30 – 12:00 with Rick O’Rourke and Elizabeth Azzuz on Traditional Burning in a contemporary context. The Cultural Fire Management Council has brought fire back to the ancestral territory of the Yurok people to ensure the continuance of our traditional life ways.  Fire is an integral part of the ecosystem, and learning how to use it in a good way will help heal the land and the people.

The Cultural Fire Management Council (CFMC) is a community based organization furthering fire use and cultural resource management. The mission of the Cultural Fire Management Council (CFMC) is to facilitate the practice of cultural burning on the Yurok Reservation and Ancestral lands, which will lead to a healthier ecosystem for all plants and animals, long term fire protection for residents, and provide a platform that will in turn support the traditional hunting and gathering activities of Yurok . CFMC has partnered with the Nature Conservancy and FLN to bring fire back to Yurok land in a way that emphasizes cultural resource management, building of relationships, and healthy communities. Although our long term goals are to return to traditional tribal land management strategies. Visit http://culturalfire.org for more on Tradition Burning.
