Ocean Restoration Master Class with the EcoRestoration Alliance
Our June 11 master class on Ocean Restoration: Building Blue Resilience for People and Planet brought together powerful voices and vital knowledge at a time when marine ecosystems face mounting threats—and it couldn’t have gone better:
This conversation was hosted by EcoRestoration Alliance, and in it, Michael Pilarski and Dr. Brian Von Herzen guided us through a time sensitive and dire yet hopeful conversation about the state of the oceans and their future. From the role of kelp forests in generating bio-aerosols that help regulate cloud cover, to the value of coastal mangroves in stabilizing shorelines and buffering climate extremes, this session highlighted the immense ecological intelligence of healthy ocean systems. We also confronted sobering realities: chemical weapons and barrels of long-forgotten pesticides still rest on the ocean floor, seeping toxins that require immediate attention and coordinated cleanup. The solutions for long-term ocean and climate health will include deliberate effort by human organizations, and tactical alliance with nature itself, to succeed.
Michael Pilarski, founder of the Global Earth Repair Foundation, is an internationally recognized permaculture educator, restoration ecologist, and author. Since the 1970s, he has worked on land restoration, agroforestry, and traditional knowledge systems across continents. Learn more about Michael here.
Brian Von Herzen, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of the Climate Foundation and a pioneer in regenerative marine technology. With a background in physics and engineering from Caltech and Princeton, he develops Marine Permaculture technologies to restore ocean productivity and sequester carbon. This master class explored:
- The urgency of ocean scalable restoration strategies was discussed
- Community-led conservation models were featured
- Real actionable strategy items were noted and consolidated for future efforts
- The connection between stable marine ecosystems and weather
This event was a key step in an ongoing series of conversations leading up to the 2025 Global Earth Repair Convergence.
If you believe in the importance of these efforts, we invite you to amplify them. As a mostly-volunteer organization with limited reach, your likes, shares, reposts, and comments make a real difference!
Thank you for being part of this global restoration movement. Let’s keep building momentum!
